home invasion (2023)
‘home invasion’ is a project of layers and discovery in the face of censorship.
Exploring the concept of familial structures, I discovered an element of dystopia within old, idealised family adverts in America throughout the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, portraying the perfect nuclear family dynamic, a portrayal in which most are utterly disconnected from in the current day.
Intrigued by the notion of social conditioning contained within art and modern media, this encouraged my exploration of masking and hijacking the identity of my own family; what does the mask reveal? This was particularly important to explore, given that I don’t have personal relationships with many of the people in my family and in the images I have appropriated and distorted in my work. It is as though I mask those I don’t know, stripping them of their identities as I see them. Or yet, is it a reflection of how they exist in their own family systems; unidentified and isolated from one another as a result of this social conditioning translating into the safety of their homes?
